IPL vs. PicoLazer: Which is Better for Dark Spots?
If you’ve been searching for a way to get rid of dark spots, sun damage or uneven pigmentation, you’ve probably come across both IPL and PicoLazer.
But which one is actually better? The answer is… it depends.
At Pure Skin Aesthetics in Burnsville, we offer both IPL and PicoLazer, and one of the questions we hear a lot is, “Which one should I do?”
We wish there were a simple answer. But when it comes to pigmentation, there isn’t one treatment that is best for everyone. The type of pigmentation you have, how widespread it is, your skin and what else you want to improve all play a role in choosing the right treatment.
Here’s how we look at IPL vs PicoLazer when it comes to dark spots and sun damage.
First, What Are Those Dark Spots?
Not every brown spot is the same.
Dark spots and pigmentation can come from years of sun exposure, hormones, acne or inflammation. You may have a few isolated sun spots, freckles, generalized sun damage or uneven pigmentation throughout your face.
And while it can be tempting to look at a before and after photo and think, ” I want that treatment,” the best treatment really depends on what is causing the pigmentation in the first place.
That’s one of the reasons we like to actually look at your skin before recommending a treatment.
IPL for Dark Spots
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It uses a broad spectrum of light to target pigment and other visible signs of sun damage.
IPL is one of our favorite options for clients who have sun damage, brown spots, uneven skin tone and redness.
One of the things we really like about IPL is that it can address several signs of sun damage at once. If your skin has a combination of brown spots, redness and that overall uneven, “my skin has seen a lot of Minnesota summers” look, IPL may be a great place to start.
After treatment, the pigment can temporarily become darker before gradually clearing. Your skin may also be red or feel warm for a period of time afterwards.
And no, you don’t necessarily need just one treatment. Some people see a noticeable difference after their treatment, while others benefit from a series.
What About PicoLazer?
PicoLazer works differently.
It uses extremely short pulses of laser energy to target pigment, and we use it for both pigmentation and skin rejuvenation at Pure Skin Aesthetics.
Pico can be a great option for certain brown spots and pigmentation concerns, especially when we’re looking at more than just surface-level “sun damage” and want to incorporate skin rejuvenation into the treatment plan.
It’s also important to know that PicoLazer isn’t just a treatment for dark spots. It’s a versatile laser that we also use for tattoo removal
So... IPL or PicoLazer?
So this is where it gets a little less exciting for anyone hoping for a simple “do this one.”
There isn’t a universal winner.
We look at IPL and PicoLazer as different tools that can be used for different skin concerns. For example, if you have a lot of overall sun damage along with redness and brown spots, IPL may be a really good option. If you’re dealing with certain pigmentation concerns and also want to focus on skin rejuvenation, PicoLazer may. be worth considering.
And sometimes, the best answer isn’t either one.
That’s why we don’t like recommending treatments based solely on a photo, a TikTok video our what worked for your friend.
Your skin is your skin.
IPL vs. PicoLazer for Dark Spots
Here’s a quick comparison:
IPL may be a great choice if you're looking to address:
- Brown spots and sun spots
- Overall sun damage
- Uneven skin tone
- Redness
- Rosacea
- Acne
- Multiple sings of sun exposure at once
PicoLazer may be a great choice if you're looking to address:
- Certain types of pigmentation
- Stubborn brown spots
- Uneven skin tone
- Fine lines and texture
- Melasma
- Skin rejuvenation
- Pigmentation while also focusing on overall skin quality
That doesn’t mean one treatment is always better than the other. It means we need to look at what your skin is actually doing.
What About a Chemical Peel?
Chemical peels can also be a really good option for certain pigmentation concerns.
At Pure Skin Aesthetics, we use professional peels as part of our corrective skincare approach, and sometimes a peel makes more sense than jumping straight to a laser or light treatment.
The right choice depends on your skin and your goals.
And sometimes we recommend starting with skincare before doing anything more aggressive. We would much rather have you spend your money on the treatment that makes sense for your skin than sell you something just because it’s popular.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
This is probably the second most common question we get after “Which one is better?”
And again, it depends.
Pigmentation doesn’t happen overnight, so correcting it usually isn’t a one-and-done process either. Some clients see a noticeable improvement after one treatment, while others need a series. Your treatment plan depends on the type and amount of pigmentation you’re dealing with and how your skin responds.
Once you get rid of those dark spots, you have to protect your skin. Daily SPF is a huge part of maintaining your results. Otherwise, you’re basically working against yourself.
Don't Forget About Your Skincare
Professional treatments are only one piece of the puzzle.
If pigmentation is something you’re trying to improve, what you do at home matters too. The right skincare can help support your results and help prevent new pigmentation from becoming a constant battle.
That’s why we don’t look at your skin and immediately say, “You need IPL.”
We look at the whole picture.
Sometimes that’s IPL. Sometimes it’s PicoLazer. Sometimes it’s a peel. Sometimes it’s skincare. And sometimes it’s a combination of treatments over time.
